The Boston Globe from Boston, Massachusetts (2025)

a a 00 0 0 0 Twenty-Six Sports THE BOSTON DAILY GLOBE-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1945 Top Tigers Again Jim Tobin Blows Lead in Ninth to Lose, 3-2 PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 13 JAP)-Veteran Jim Tobin blew tp in the ninth inning today, ng up three blazing hits and two valks in rapid succession, and the eague-leading Detroit Tigers lost mother game they thought they ilready had won to Connie Mack's Athletics, 3-2. with winning Tobin, Bob Estalella across strolled, with the count three balls and two strikes on Ed Busch and the bases loaded, failed to get a corher with the payoff pitch. The ligers, from Manager Steve D'Neill on down, protested vioently, but Umpire Joe Rue stuck nanfully to his decision. McGhee's Triple Starts Trouble Going into the ninth, Tobin, with almost perfect control of his flutfering knuckle ball, had A's fown with four widely hits and held an apparently safe 2 lead as a result of two brief outbursts his Tiger teammates against Jesse Flores.

Peck, first Atheltic up in the ninth, flied out to right, but then the balloon blew up in Tobin's florid lace. Bill McGhee slammed a terrific triple to right and Kish, who ran for McGhee, scored the tying run a moment later on Estalella's single to left. MBiek" Siebert, next up, powered la double off the right field wall, sending Estalella to third. At this point Manager O'Neill held a lengthy confab with Tobin, but finally decided to leave him in. George Kell, thes passed, dangerous filling the sacks.

Then, when; Buddy Tobin whipped, the three second strikes out, it looked like a reprieve for the harassed Tigers. But it wasn't to be. With the game at stake Tobin couldn't find the dish, and the Tigers suffered another loss they could ill afford with a five-game series against the fast-stepping Washington Senators staring them in the face, starting Saturday. The scores were 4 to 3 in the fine four-hitter pitched by Elmer Singleton against Al Gerheauser, and 2 to 0 in an afterpiece, in which the Pirates' two runs were negotiated on a pair of passes and a brace of base hits before two men had been retired in an opening inning pitched by left-hander Bob Whitcher. After that, the Corsairs made only one hit in 62-3 innings and none against Don Hendrickson in the ninth.

Medwick, Holmes Drives Grabbed The Braves made nine hits in one game and six in the other. The tough breaks were to have Medwick's 400- foot drive taken at the left field wall by Jim Russell, and later that Tommy Holmes' terrific swat with Masi on base was grabbed by John Barrett at the right field barrier. Both of these socks would have and would put the Tribe into been -masters at Braves Field each ball game. 'Gansett Horsemen's Requests Granted By EDDIE WELCH PAWTUCKET, R. Sept.

O'Donnell will have a place in the stand as an observer, but will not have a vote nor sit in final judgment. The horsemen's request for a $2000 purse minimum was agreed to by the management, as was the request for private parking spaces and special seats in the grandstand for horsemen only. 13 (AP) I Masterson Bests Feller Easily, 4-0 Masterson stole the show from Bob Feller tonight, hurling the Washington Senators to a 4-0 victory over the Cleveland ace. Masterson let the Indians down with two hits, and changed the complexion of the exciting American League pennant race by pulling the Senators up within onehalf game of the pace-setting Detroit Tigers. the sixth time that the Senators have been SO close to the Tigers they could almost reach out and grab them. Masterson, like Feller, is a former sailor, and he had the better of it a single to Al Cihocki in the third all way tonight. He yielded and another to Frank Hayes in the eighth.

Only once was the 6-foot-2 right hander in trouble. Cihocki's hit, a walk to Feller passed ball put Indians on second and third with in the third. But Masterson cut loose with a blazing fast ball almost as swift as Feller's to strike out Felix Mackiewicz, Mickey Rocco flied to George Case. Rookie Bingo Binks, looking at Feller's stuff for the first time, gave the 24,606 fans something to shout about in the fourth by driving in the first two runs of a three-run Washington attack. Gil Torres' hot single sent Binks home.

Bill McCarthy has been appointed football coach at East Boston, succeding Kilroy, adding the grid sport to his hockey, track and baseball problems. Now all Joe McKenney's staff has to do is find a coach for Brandeis and into the Boston system for a coach for disk East Boston. 'Applicants' line forms on the right.
